shards of alara storm

September 4, 2008

with the shards of alara minisite going up the other day i have had time to spill my brain over the newly spoiled cards. let me start by saying that multicolor decks are what i have nearly always played. the thrill of having a hybrid creature or spell from mixed color origins in the magic universe has always had a spot in my style of playing. (for some reason, i wasn’t too thrilled on the ‘either/or’ casting costs in the shadowmoor block) since the first glimpse of shards i have felt this immense connection/excitement/inclination towards it. upon delving into the spoiler a few cards have stuck with me.

Qasali Ambusher is probably the most useful card to me so far. second turn you could have a forest and a plains tapped for your watchwolf and as a flyer attacks over it you can instantly drop one (or two!) of these into play, free of charge. with it’s reach ability you will be able to chop off its wings and have immense creature advantage going into your third turn. not to mention kev walker’s great artwork, my favorite color combination in the game, and chill inducing flavor text! also with temple garden in play, you could rip him out on the first round!

Sharding Sphinx is a very interestingly powerful card. first off, notice how it is a blue card? now look at its card type: artifact creature. secondly, its ability is overkill for artifact decks. number one, these thopter tokens are going to  be colored blue, secondly they will be artifacts themselves, and of course, have flying. imagine if they bring back affinity!

Sorry, but there are such cards like sarcomite myr and reaper king.

oh good eye john! im betting that myr will be seen in this block. even though that reaper king can be played with any color, it isn’t devoted to a color like the myr and the sphinx.
