Final Shards of Alara Block: ‘Alara Reborn’

October 20, 2008

The final set of Shards of Alara has a name: Alara Reborn. What does that mean for us? Something along the lines of a Fifth Dawn approach I am assuming. First you have Alara split, then you have Conflux where the now shards start to come back together slowly, and now you have all of Alara ‘reborn’ again, into the flourishing plane it once was.

It will be released on thursday April 30th, and the previews will start on the 13th, with 145 cards in the set.

I don’t know what to say about the Reborn expansion symbol… it’s so abstract… I prefer Alara and Conflux symbols rather than Reborn one… the last set deserve something better I guess… And about the name, I think it’s the first time we see a Block in reverse… I mean, it had’n been better to start with the whole Alara plane as one, and then go on with one plane shatter into five… what do you think about that?

I wonder how the storyline will play out. If rumor is true, and I explain this further in my newer blog posts, Nicol Bolas tore the plane into it’s Shards with immense power. Perhaps the Planeswalkers Elspeth, Tezzeret, Sarkhan, and Ajani team up to restore balance and defeat Nicol Bolas? It’s a possibility.

Number 1) Shards of Alara’s story is being carried out with just enough depth for us to know about each Shard’s current setting and a bit of each of their own respective back stories. i.e: Bant has the main plains with a few colonies of the outskirts with a bit of grudge against each other.

Number 2) The spoiler art for Conflux has not alluded to some mystery figure that all the planeswalkers must team up to destroy.

Number 3) Nicol Bolas is seen in his original art reading books, and being very non-violent, and he is also an elder dragon. With Grixis colors and being a dragon, it fits well into Conflux well, as Jund shares some colors to Grixis. I do not see him as the kind of Elder Dragon they bring back just to be ganged up on by a bunch of plansewalkers, but rather to bring the shards back together.

Number 4) The only things that are hidden in Alara’s past are various Sphinx in Esper, the hydra ‘Progenitus’ of Naya, the murderer of Ajani’s brother, and what exactly caused the plane of Alara to erupt as it did, so so long ago.

Number 5) Don’t believe everything you read on the internet. Even though it is an extremely convincing card list, it could still be fake. Just the whole thing floating around the internet for a few days until being taken down right after someone starts asking questions seems a bit strange. Kind of coming out of nowhere, too.

The symbol is trying it’s simplest to represent Alara and its shards coming back together, and still be different from every other set logo to date. Unfortunately they can’t just take expansion symbol of Portal.

and about the block being in reverse, I think this set is kind of the first of recent sets where Wizard’s is reinventing its approach to marketing Magic: the Gathering. Using new players as a base, they have taken great measures to assure each person feels at home with a single shard and then start slowly introducing more and more to each one until that player has dabbled into every color and style of play.
To further my notion: Mythic rares being created for more of just the pursuit of cards and an increasing number of people being forced to trade amongst friends or in turn open much more product to find that planeswalker or insane creature for their deck, putting lands into packs for beginners to build decks with ease (and with the shards being three colors helps them out more because they won’t have to just focus on one color land so much), the ‘book’ being very picture heavy and just the bare minimum of actual reading story but just an outline of everything with possibilities of so much story to be playing in the reader’s head.

well for the nicol bolas thing:
    1. Nicol Bolas was once a planeswalker before him and Arcades Sabboth, Chromium, Vaevatics Asmaldi and Palladia-Mors all fought against each other and nearly tore the plane of Dominaria apart and they sacrificed their planewalker spark to save it (possibily he found it again)
2.Nicol Bolas has always been pictured as evil he is da main representative for black amidst da other elder dragons dat all fought against each other and also in his flavour text for his card of From the Vault:Dragons is “Dominaria’s most ancient evil”
    3. it is confirmed dat he will be a planeswalker in conflux and that der will also be progenetus and apocalypse hydra but i do not know the role of each of dese also clues have been left on nicol bolas appearing from the begining of shards of alara if anyone is interested in more details about this or to know da clues email me and ill tell u lol der r farrr too many to write em all down XD

It is confirmed he will be a planeswalker?

Also the clues of Nicol Bolas from ‘the beginning of shards of alara’ is more than likely just centering around the art on Cruel Ultimatum.

The oringinal art of Nicol Bolas from Legends is what I have been basing my thoughts on. The art from the ‘Vault: Dragons’ doesn’t look very planeswalker-esque if you ask me.

    @Dillon

It’s not meant too look planeswalker-esque.

Cards of characters that aren’t of the planeswalker type are exactly that, that character at a point in time when they weren’t a planeswalker be that before they gained there spark or perhaps somehow lost it.

Jaya Ballard in Timespiral is an example of this.

Release of cards does not indicate chronological order either. As pointed out (I think it was in Arcana) by Wizards Ajani Venjeant is actually Ajani earlier in his life than Ajani Goldmane represents.

I’m sorry to say this, but it’s very difficult to take you seriously when you talk like that. I haven’t even read your last two posts because it was making my brain hurt. But both Wiefunt and Dillon make very good points. I’m not going to try to make sense of it, but it is clear that they will team up to take down one enemy. I’m not going to bother thinking of who or what it may be, I’d rather just wait to see for myself. Also, the card list was definitely a fake. Wizards has not released the official list yet, at least not that I found. Though I could be mistaken.

I personally think this is the best block ever made. the storyline, the art, the cards themselves were great. i cant wait to get my hands on the naya intro deck from alara reborn.

i still dont understand why the shards have to combine anyway. i like them better seperated into five shards. i mean, i am interested to see how they merge, but it dosent make since. well i am curious to se how the last set turns out, so ill see.

I think Alara Reborn will be good for Grixis lovers, including me. With all the actually kind-of-good card, Thraximundar can be abused, and there is still Hellspark and Gouger. Not to mention all the good instants and sorceries in B/R: Thought Hemmorhage, Bituminous Blast (That +all the cheap good cards in B/R) and TERMINATE. Im beginning to think to go back for my 4 Graven Cairns :D.

But nevertheless, I am disappointed by the overcosted Bolas, tweaking it to be weaker but cheaper would be accepted. but he’s just non-casually unplayable.
